Today, BEING made a submission to the review of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 No 48.

In our submission, we have advocated for changes to be made in a number of key areas. These include:

  • updating the act’s language and expanding its protections to more people
  • vilification protections for persons with psychosocial disabilities and
  • recognition of the right to supported decision-making.

We have also noted in our submission the importance of the work of the Australian Human Rights Commission in providing guidance for the next steps in  human rights reform across Australia (Free and Equal: An Australian conversation on human rights | Australian Human Rights Commission) and advocating for the need for a human rights act in NSW.

In this regard, NSW has lagged behind the ACT, Queensland and Victoria who have already legislated human rights acts.
