We’re happy that a resolution to the ongoing psychiatrists pay dispute has been reached today. Both parties committed to accept the ruling in advance of it being handed down. The unpredictability and changes to service provision caused by the resignations threatened at the beginning of the year has had a negative impact on supports provided to consumers.
We hope much needed focus return to ushering in systemic change. We call on the Government to commit to consumer-led reform with consumers leading the co-design of the mental health system, backed by the necessary spending to deliver supports that will meaningfully improve the lives of those with mental health challenges.
For the mental health system to operate on a third of the budget it needs to meet the level of need is a form of systemic discrimination towards people with mental health challenges. Consumers need choice in the supports they access, especially in community-based and peer-led options. Psychiatrists have a part to play in providing the services consumers need but they are just one part of the solution, so today’s decision is no silver bullet .
The mental health system must place consumers firmly at the centre of their support needs, listening to them, acting on their advice, and funding the solutions required if we are to evolve a system that delivers outcomes and respects consumers human rights
