BEING has made a submission to the NSW Government’s Draft Homelessness Strategy advocating for a human rights’ approach.
The draft strategy provides a large volume of supporting documentation, primarily prepared by external academic consultants. BEING has asked for the studies to be made available in plain English versions and for a greater inclusion of lived experience in the strategy as consumers are the people with the best understanding of what it is like to access and search for housing within current service systems.
BEING’s response is structured around three key goals and the KPI’s required to achieve them. In practice if someone is unfortunate enough to experience homelessness, the occurance should be:
- Rare – eg people released from the criminal justice or mental healthcare system must not be released into homelessness
- Brief – eg housing support services include those with lived experience to better support people on their recovery journey and
- Not repeated – eg those provided with social housing are also provided with the wrap around services they need to maintain a roof over their heads.
