BEING Submission to the DDA

The federal Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (Cth) (the DDA) is currently being reviewed by the Attorney General’s department and last week BEING made a submission to the review.

In our submission we, express support for recommendations made by the National Mental Health Consumer Alliance (the Alliance) and  make a number of specific recommendations in relation to intersectionality, policing, the development of departmental disability action plans and expansion of the disability standards.

In particular, we call for:

– The DDA should more overtly recognise expressly identify, protect and accommodate people with multiple impairments

– The DDA to cover all aspects of public life, including policing and justice

– State and territory governments to be required to report annually under the DDA on the development, implementation, and outcomes of implementing the Alliance’s recommendations.

We hope that the review of the act will lead to a more up to date Act and to simpler and less burdensome complaint processes.
