Earlier this months, BEING’s CEO Giancarlo de Vera sat down in conversation with design and innovation studio Today for their monthly newsletter feature on change-makers in the for-purpose space using the opportunity to lay out their vision for system change in mental health.
The interview explores some of Giancarlo’s influences, what needs to shift to change values across the sector, how their experience in disability advocacy can inform mental health sector evolution and the current priorities for the mental health consumer movement.
“We want to see more peer-led community-based models of care. We know that they work for users of the system, but the investments haven’t been there to match the ambition.”
“We want to see reforms to discrimination laws. We want to see opportunities for us [mental health consumers] to drive the research agenda…to have lived experience frame the research agenda and work with researchers to know what we don’t know.”
