Holding Canberra to account on Human Rights
As part of its obligations as a signatory to the UN Convention on Human Rights, countries have to appear before the UN once every 4 and a half years for what’s called a Universal Periodic Review (UPR) to substantiate their progress. Australia’s next UPR will take place on 26 January 2026.
Between now and then, Australian advocates and individuals have an opportunity to bring to the government’s attention outstanding human rights issues and pressure the government to address them ahead of the UPR where they will have to justify their action and inaction.
Australian advocacy groups, including BEING, are mobilising to make this coming Human Rights Day (10 December) a Day of Action to encourage the government to do more to enshrine human rights in Australia.
How can you help?
Write to the Attorney-General
We’re asking all our members and supporters to write a letter to the federal attorney-general detailing what human rights changes you think the government need to address. To get you started you can download the framework for a letter here, but please rewrite it in your own words as cookie-cutter letters are often ignored.
