At the start of 2015, we made a response to the discussion paper on the NSW Disability Inclusion Plan.
Under the Disability Inclusion Act passed by the NSW Parliament in 2014, the NSW Government has to put together a plan outlining how it will improve the inclusion of people with disability in NSW. The NSW Government put out the discussion paper at the end of last year calling for ideas for its plan.
Our response made a number of recommendations to the Government. One of our recommendations was to overcome the long-time separation between the mental health and disability sector. Many mental health consumers have disability related to their mental illness, but many consumers said they couldn’t get support because their disability weren’t being recognised. We recommended that the NSW Government make sure the Plan covers mental health consumers, and that mental health consumers are involved in the development, implementation and review of the plan.
